Maintenance Updates:

Snyder Avenue Park:

  • Invested in a snow pusher, a specialty piece of equipment that will help protect the turf from damage related to winter storms and significantly reduce game cancellations.
  • Opened a concession stand, offering food and drinks to patrons for the first time in approximately seven years.
  • Enhanced signage obtained from Union County to highlight park rules.

Lower Columbia Park:

  • Seeding is scheduled to take place in the fall and the Department invested in a turf growth cover, which will protect the ground from seed loss and will accelerate the seed germination process.
  • New fencing to be installed around the park in 2019.
  • Handicap accessible playground will be installed in 2019.
  • Roof structure will be built over the picnic tables to provide shelter in 2019.

Veterans Memorial Park:

  • Soccer fields have been reformatted to allow for dual fields - a 7 vs. 7 field and a 9 vs. 9 field. The extra field will reduce if not eliminate the need for the 9 vs 9 field in the back of Passaic River Park (which has experienced drainage issues).
  • The Department is also exploring the installation of a removable shading system to protect against the sun and rain.

Baseball Fields:

  • Sansone 1, Sansone 2, and Upper Horseshoe fields all have been approved to be refurbished this summer. The Department will select a specialized athletic field contractor to rototill, grade, and edge the fields as well as rebuild pitching mounds, add infield mix, and more.
    • A special material called Pro’s Choice, used in major league fields, will be added into the infield mix to help with water drainage.
  • The Department will also enter into a separate annual maintenance contract to prepare fields for resting in the winter. The preparation will include edging, removing weeds or grass in the infield, filling in any holes, grading the infield, and more.
  • Assessment of Synder baseball field has been performed. Depending on the weather the work could start Winter 2018.
  • Assessments of other baseball fields will be done in 2019.

Field Scheduling & Setup:

The Berkeley Heights Recreation Commission & Department works closely with the Berkeley Heights Department of Public Works to ensure fields are prepared for all sports and other events. In order to properly manage resources and provide exceptional service to the residents we ask for everyone to adhere to the field scheduling process.

Field Scheduling Process:

To schedule a field a request should be submitted to tbarton@bhtwp.com 5 days prior to the game or event day. Requests should be made by the respective program head only. The Recreation Director coordinates field schedules with the program heads. All changes to a previously submitted schedule must be communicated 48 hours in advance of game or event day. Failure to do so could result in an unprepared field.

See Table 1 for a list of program heads.

Spring season is a busy sports season. Prior to Spring sports season starting the Recreation Director works with any Program Heads that need to share fields to avoid scheduling conflicts.

Maintenance and field preparation should not be performed by anyone other than the Recreation Commission, Board of Education, Department of Public Works, or other authorized groups previously approved by the Recreation Commission.

Issue Reporting:

The Berkeley Heights Recreation Commission, Recreation Department, the Board of Education, and Department of Public Works encourage anyone to report issues at a field including, but not limited to:

    • brush or debris on or around field,
    • vandalism,
    • grass cutting,
    • lines not painted,
    • any issue you feel could impact the safety of the children, coaches, or parents

Please report issues to fieldissues@bhtwp.com.
If possible, include a picture of the issue.

Fees:

In-Town Organizations
$10 per participant per season

Out-of-Town Organizations
$50 per game or $10 per camper (Camps)

Management Plan:

The Recreation Director is responsible for ensuring the fields, maintained by the Recreation Commission, are serviced, improved, and controlled. The Recreation Director provides the Department of Public Works with the maintenance and game schedule. The Department of Public Works performs the work outlined by the Recreation Commission. Table 1 displays the general maintenance schedule for fields in Berkeley Heights.
